My first Birchbox

Monday, May 28, 2018

I mentioned in one of my recent posts that I'd decided to subscribe to Birchbox to celebrate the fact that I'm done paying the SLC (for now!). I figured I'd put that bit of money into something new and different, such as a beauty subscription box.

I've tried beauty subscription boxes before but that was years ago, and I found the whole thing a bit underwhelming. I figured I'd try again, this time with Birchbox, to see if I like them the second time round. May's box arrived last Friday and contained five dreamy products in the cutest palm-print box.

Things I want to note right off the bat:

1. The beauty box itself was packaged in cardboard without any excessive filler like Styrofoam or bubble wrap.
2. The box and leaflets inside are made of nice quality card and can easily be recycled.
3. The box isn't HUGE either so it doesn't take up a ton of space if you decide to keep it and repurpose it.

Immediately I'm already loving this.

I received a Luscious Lip Stain from Doucce in the shade 'Steaming Red', a Skinny Liquid Eyeliner from Eyeko, an Activated Charcoal Natural Deodorant Balm from Native Unearthed, the New Age Precision 8-in-1 Power Serum from Marcelle, and some Geranium and Peppermint Botanical Body Wash from Greenfrog Botanic.

So far I've tried four out the five products.

I adore the activated charcoal deodorant balm by Native Unearthed, surprisingly. I've tried many natural deodorants, but none have ever come close to doing what I want them to do. Some of them have been so underperforming I might as well have not worn any at all.

This balm is... an experience; once you rub it in it almost turns into a silky soft powder. It smells amazing and kept my underarms feeling soft for hours. It doesn't stop you sweating entirely but it doesn't make you feel overly sticky or smelly either. It does a great job if I'm out and about, but for work I will always need something more hardcore and high performing because I work in a hot kitchen.

The Greenfrog Botanic shower gel is good enough, it doesn't lather which is kinda strange but it smells so nice and has loads of kind, skin-loving ingredients. It's also organic, vegan, cruelty free, and has no additives, parabens, SLS, or palm oil, so it's a winner in my book.

The Doucce lip stain is another unusual one. When you apply it immediately dries down into this weird matte powder texture. It is hard to work with but the colour is so gorgeous I'm going to give it another go. It can be a bit messy but the good thing is that when it wears off over time it will leave the most natural looking colour on your lips. No need to top up throughout the day (which is a lazy girl's dream). Oh, and the shade 'Steaming Red' isn't red at all, it's a dark mauve, so I dunno why it's called that.

The Marcelle serum is OK - I've only used it for a few days so I haven't noticed any crazy changes. It feels nice enough. You apply it to a clean face then moisturise after. I do love a good serum, so I'll keep on using this.

And lastly, the eyeliner, which is the one product I haven't tried yet and never will because I don't wear eyeliner. I hate the stuff, but I swatched this Eyeko one on my hand and it glides on beautifully and is super black and precise. Would probably be pretty great for someone who wears it. I will most likely give this to a friend who will appreciate it more.

Overall I'm pleased. Excited for June's box to arrive already.
