Going to York for a few days...

Monday, February 26, 2018

I'm off to York for a few days this week. I'll be going on Wednesday morning and coming back Friday afternoon. Friday is my birthday and I'll be 24! 🎉

We were planning on going to Knaresborough on Thursday but apparently England's going to be hit with some snow this week (the 'Beast from the East' the telly keeps going on about) so I'm thinking it'll be safer to stop within the city walls. I was hoping the weather would warm up and I'd only need to take a couple of chunky cardigans with me but ohhh nooo, it's going to be coat, scarf, and gloves weather for sure. Damn you snowdrops for making me think it's spring.

I've packed most of my suitcase already so tomorrow will be an easy breezy day relaxing in the house. Hope you guys have an excellent week. Expect lots of photos and Stories on my Instagram in the coming days, I'm @katebattlewind.

Showcase: floor lighting

Friday, February 23, 2018

Functional and striking, the humble floor lamp can easily transform any space. A lamp with a shelf (such as the Shelfie from Loaf) means you can keep your tea and a good book at arm's length. Simply add an armchair and a fluffy blanket and you're set for those bitter winter evenings.

Alternatively, a more modern and quirky floor lamp (such as the Flos lamp from Amara) can be used as a piece of art to draw attention to certain parts of a room, especially if you have a large space to work with.

I've picked out 10 of my favourite lamps from around the web. Happy shopping!

6 ways to style jewel-toned satin

Sunday, February 18, 2018

Satin is popping up all over the high street in the boldest, brightest jewel shades this season. I'm digging the trend, although I don't know if I'm brave enough to pull it off myself. I thought I'd pick a few pieces out and style some outfits around them to give you guys some inspiration if you're looking to incorporate some satin into your wardrobe for spring/summer. Enjoy!

Holy grail product: Astral face & body moisturiser

Tuesday, February 13, 2018

Shortly after publishing my skincare routine, I stumbled upon Astral.

I was having a couple of issues with Weleda - I don't think my skin was as dry as I thought it was, therefore Weleda wasn't doing much for me on a day to day basis. I still love Skin Food, it is an actual miracle product, but now I just use it in more concentrated dry areas and not all over my face all of the time. I needed something lighter and less greasy (Skin Food takes a long time to soak in which is why it makes the perfect night cream!) and so with some Googling I stumbled across the most old school moisturiser I've ever seen.

Astral face and body moisturiser is one of those products anyone under 30 would probably bypass. It's been going since 1953 and it's the kind of face product your gran would use. This is what I thought at first anyway, but after doing some research it turns out this cream is raved about by celebs and, well, pretty much everyone everywhere. Plus it's cheap as chips. I had to test this out.

To start off with I bought myself a 50ml pot of Astral Original for £1.29 and a tube of Astral Soft for... wait for it... 15p. Superdrug had a tube of Astral Soft on their clearance shelf for a meager 15 pence, so I snatched it up. I ain't turning down skincare for pennies! Turns out Astral Soft might be my favourite of the two - it's lighter, but it feels just as moisturising as the Original. It also soaks in a teeny bit quicker and I love whacking this stuff on whenever I feel like I need a skin boost on no-makeup days. It's perfection. I like to save the Original for night time when I need a bit more intense hydration.

Apologies for the unflattering close up of my dehydrated cuticles 😅

This stuff has saved my skin. I was getting horrendous spots all over my face - chin, forehead, temples, hairline, nose, even my cheeks which is really rare, and when I started using Astral my face started to clear up quicker than I've ever seen it. My spots are so stubborn so it takes a lot to get rid of them, but these face creams did it with very little effort. I've also started exfoliating my skin more often using little cleansing sponges from Home Bargains for 69p (can I get a hell yeah) which has given me baby-soft skin. I am so impressed. 69p cleansing sponges and 15p face moisturisers is all it takes, apparently(!)

If you have combination skin, I'd recommend Astral products. The Original comes in three different sizes, each of them under £10, however I'd give the product a sniff before you purchase - the creams have a musky perfumed rose scent, so if that's not your thing you might want to skip this. I like those old-fashioned kind of scents but I know they're not everyone's cup of tea.

My skin is delicate and spot-prone and neither of the creams or their scent has made my skin red, sore, blotchy, itchy, or break out. Hallelujah! Obviously if you have very sensitive skin, do a patch test before using it on your face to be 100% sure.

This sounds like a #spon but it isn't, honestly. Astral face creams are just really this good. Oh, and cleansing sponges are my new favourite thing. Their gentle (but not too soft) exfoliating texture is perfect for everyday use to thoroughly clean that oily layer of make-up and dead skin off the face without irritating too much. I recommend also!!!

OK, I'm done gushing.

Spring wardrobe 2018

Wednesday, February 07, 2018

Despite temperatures being in the 0-5°C territory and it trying to snow every five minutes, I have been feeling very spring-y recently. I can't wait for blue skies, sun, blossom, and greenery. I can't wait to put my chunky coats away and wear flats without my feet getting frostbite.

I'm just so, so excited for the day I can leave the house without wearing four layers, y'know?

I thought I'd inject as much colour and print as possible to this year's spring wardrobe. I'm tired of all the dark and drab clothes in shops at the moment; I get that moody colours are 'in' this time of year, but we're in February now and to me February is fresh and youthful and bright, it always feels to me like the proper end to winter. Dark and damp January has been and gone and we're finally seeing  those long-awaited signs of spring. (snowdrops! daffodils! colour! life!)

Hope you enjoy the items I've chosen, let me know if you pick anything up!

Get to know me tag

Sunday, February 04, 2018

Hi! I found this interesting tag on Lots of Livres and decided to give it a go. Feel free to copy the questions (there's 30 in total) and answer them yourselves.

1. Explain your Twitter handle - katebattlewind
It's just my first name and my blog name, nothing too exciting. I would've loved to have gone with just 'battlewind' but it was taken.

2. Who inspires you and why?
Fellow bloggers inspire me, especially Sara, Olivia, Rosie, and Erin. And of course my beautiful and magnificent mum who is my everything.

3. Do you care what others think about you?
Not really. I used to when I was younger but now I couldn't give a monkey's.

4. What are you most looking forward to?
At the moment I'm most looking forward to staying in York for my birthday. My mum and I are spending two nights in the sweetest B&B and I can't wait.

5. What is one life rule you follow?
I aim to be kind to everyone because you never know what people are going through.

6. What's your dream job?
I wanted to be a film director for years (and I still do), but writing is my number one passion, so being an author would be pretty cool.

7. Which fictional character do you wish you could meet?
Sherlock Holmes.

8. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Everything under the sun I think, but I loved art all the way through primary and secondary school so I mostly wanted to be an artist.

9. If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?
I am Lisa Simpson through and through.

10. What skill would you like to master?
Writing! Painting! Basically anything and everything creative. Oh, and I'd love to speak fluent German or Spanish.

Beeswax candles & magazine subscriptions

Thursday, February 01, 2018

It's been a busy ol' week. Been working, been sleeping, been shopping a teeny bit...

I accidentally on purpose defied my self-implemented spending ban while browsing the H&M website recently. They now have free delivery for club members(!) so I obviously had to celebrate by buying something. I picked this cardigan from the sale; it's a toasty one with a very flattering shawl collar in my favourite boring-but-versatile shade, dark grey. Excited to wear it, I feel like I've lived in my work uniform for a thousand years. Ready to put some normal human clothes on!

Also, a week or two before I enforced this 'spending ban', I bought a vintage candlestick from eBay (pictured above) and I've been putting it to the test with my new beeswax candles. It is now probably one of my favourite things I own - look at that handle! So fancy. And as much as I'm loving my beeswax candles so far, they burn real fast. Like, blink and they're gone fast. I'm going to buy more but I kinda wish they'd chill out and slow down so I can savour them.

P.S. Mini light-box is from Sainsbury's.

February's issue of The Simple Things arrived through my letterbox last week. My brother bought me a year's subscription for Christmas so I get to look forward to a brand-spanking new magazine being delivered to my house once a month. How luxurious.

As per usual, February's issue is a delight. My Instagram photo I tagged them in even got reposted on The Simple Things' Insta! It has 653 likes so far, which is mind-blowing to me.

Hope you guys have an excellent weekend. I have no plans as of yet, but I hope the sun shows its face at least once. I've been enjoying that bright winter sun.
