Checking in

The fieriest sunset I ever did see.

You won't be surprised to learn I've done absolutely nothing since my last post, but I do have a valid reason.

Work has picked up big time - I'm doing more hours because we're two staff members down (one has left, one is on holiday). This is only temporary, things should go back to normal mid-July. I've been doing more long shifts than I'd usually do so when I come home after work I'm super pooped and I tend to just go straight to bed and chill. And then fall asleep at like, 7pm.

That is my explanation for lack of blog posts and Tweets, because I've even been neglecting Twitter which is not like me at all. I'm just tiiiiiiired. Fortunately I have today off, so I'm going to indulge in some retail therapy. I'm feeling very TKMaxx-y today. It's calling me.

In other news, I went for an eye test last week. My sight has gotten worse (lol, of course it has) and I need some new specs. I've not seen any I love yet so it might be a while before I get some, plus glasses are mad expensive and it hurts me a little bit to spend well over £100 to get two sets of lenses (one set is for my sunnies). I know they're a priority but ahhhh... why aren't glasses free? I feel like they should be free. 😅

If you see any cute tortoiseshell frames on the web, send them my way. Preferably under £60.

The light that shines through my voiles in a morning is my fave.

The weather has been positively awful this week. It started raining yesterday morning and has not stopped since. I can't believe we had a full-on scorching heatwave 2 weeks ago and now it's 10°c and pouring it down. I'm currently sat in my room with a hoodie on and yesterday I went to work in a coat. It's nearly July! J. U. L. Y.

/weather rant over

Aaaaaaand last but not least, I'm in the process of building my own PC with the help of my tech-savvy brother. I say 'I'm building my own PC' but I'm not building it, my brother is. He's the one who knows what he's doing so I'm basically just buying the parts (that he suggests I buy) and then watching him build it for me. So to summarise I'm doing absolutely nothing except parting with my cash! I'm excited to have the finished product though, it will be amazing to play the Sims in glorious high settings.

So that's all I have today. Sorry for the mish-mash post. Hope you guys have a good weekend.

Latest obsession: culottes

Friday, June 23, 2017

When culottes became the 'it' thing, I honestly thought they were the ugliest item of clothing in the world.

Fast forward a bit and now they're all I want to wear. I love them.

You think at first glance they'll be really unflattering because they're so shapeless, but they're actually the opposite (for me, anyway). I'm quite big around my belly, hips and thighs and I find culottes are surprisingly good at flattering that part of my body. The way they cut off at the shin means they're showing off the slimmest part of my legs instead of making me look squat.

Culottes are comfy, versatile, roomy, and can be dressed up or down. If you're unsure about the style, try some on next time you go shopping and see what they look like on you. Granted they won't suit everyone, but if you're a bit iffy with your middle area like me, I'd suggest styling them with a slim-fit t-shirt tucked in to balance out the bagginess of the culottes (plus most culottes sit on your waist so they conceal any bumps you're not keen on).

Pop on a leather jacket and some trainers and you're set.

I've featured 10 pairs of culottes from all over the web - they vary in price, colour, material, and length. Enjoy!

Birthdays, walled gardens, & ladybirds

Thursday, June 15, 2017

My mum celebrated her birthday yesterday. We didn't have anything planned so I suggested a walk since the weather was beautiful.

We took off to Clumber Park for a few hours in the morning. We arrived a few minutes before the park officially opened (the early bird catches the worm, or whatever) and headed straight for the lake to explore the re-imagined Lincoln Frigate while there was hardly anyone around. Yeah, I forgot to take pictures of it but you can see and read more about it here. I did take some good pics of the lake though, as you can see above. I love the reflection of the sun in the first photo.

We wandered up the lake a little more then did a U-turn to head to the Walled Kitchen Garden to snoop around their huge rhubarb collection and gorgeous flowers.

So peaceful. All we could hear were bees, birds, and footsteps on the gravel. I love being away from the town centre and traffic and big crowds of people. I need to live in the countryside, it's honestly all I want in life.

There are now NT deckchairs scattered around the garden which my mum and I could've sat in for hours. We sat under some apple trees in the long grass and had ten minutes with our eyes shut, soaking up all that vitamin D.

Once we'd finished up at Clumber, we visited my aunt's house where I got to see my nan and cousin who I don't get to see very often which was lovely. We scoffed cupcakes and sausage rolls and had a right good chinwag.

Downside to all this - I got heat exhaustion from being in the sun all day, not drinking enough, and basically not protecting my head or topping up my sunscreen (I'm blonde and pale, so that should explain a lot). Because of this my mum and I haven't gone to the Black Country Living Museum today (mentioned in this post) because I've been feeling hot, poorly, and tired since yesterday afternoon. I'm so clever, aren't I?

So that's that. If you're passing through Notts, do stop off at Clumber and don't forget to visit the Walled Kitchen Garden.

P.S. Look at this darn cute ladybird I spotted in the garden the other day.

Hey June

Sunday, June 11, 2017

Hm, June hasn't got off to a good start, has it? Way too much rain and wind, it's supposed to be summer isn't it? Or near enough...

I am currently at the beginning of my week off so I'm hoping to do some exciting things this week if the weather gets better. A bit of sun would be lovely, thanks. God, I have to stop talking about the weather all the time, don't I? It must be so dull to read about but I'm not a true Brit until I've moaned about the weather. It's the law.

At least Friday afternoon brightened up a bit just as I'd finished work - see image above.

In other news...

My NT membership card came through the post the other day. This was an impulsive purchase, I just felt like I should get one because I visit a lot of NT sites and, y'know, entry prices aren't cheap and sometimes forking out around £5 - £15 each for a ticket is not doable, but a membership means you only have to fork out once a year (it cost me £32.40) to have access to everything for free. And I'll probably be fine paying £32 a year (up until I turn 25) to be able to visit hundreds upon hundreds of incredible places.

So yeah, hoping to get a lot of use out of that this summer.

I really want to get outside and move more. I've put a lot of weight on over the last year (I blame my thyroid just because I can) and although I have a decent job where I'm on my feet a lot and doing lots of walking throughout the day, it's not doing much for me. I don't eat great, I'm not a huge fan of veg and fruit (the bane of my existence) but I try and drink a lot of water and I always eat breakfast in a morning, but I know it takes so much more than that. Exercise and gyms scare me because I feel like I'm being watched, that I look like an idiot or I'm doing it wrong and someone's laughing at me. Ridiculous paranoia I know, but I can't shake it off. Even if I do some exercise in my room I feel stupid because I'm painfully unfit and I feel like people can see me mucking it up.

Anxiety. Boo, hiss.

Anyway, apart from working and glumly looking out of my bedroom window at the rain, I've not done a great deal. I know, I know, I'm the most thrilling person you've ever met. Settle down.

Hope you had a fab weekend. Enjoy the above photo of some ducklings being all cute and small. Everybody loves ducklings.

My 2017 make-up routine & favourite products

Thursday, June 01, 2017

Today I'm going to show you the contents of my make-up bag. It's not overly exciting - there's no high end brands or anything technical or complicated in here, it's very basic, simple, and affordable. First I'll go through my base products (primer and concealer) then the finishing touches (eyes, blush etc.) Lately I've been trying to use as many cruelty free products as I can and ones I am currently using that aren't I plan to replace with cruelty free alternatives when they're empty.

CF = Cruelty free.

MUA Skin Define Hydro Primer (CF) | MUA Pro-Base Moisturising Primer (CF) | MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NC15 | Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer in Fair (CF) | Seventeen Stay Time Concealer in Extra Fair (CF)

KIKO Weightless Perfection Wet and Dry Powder Foundation (CF) | Natural Collection Blushed Cheeks in Peach Melba (CF) | MUA Undress Your Skin Shimmer Highlighter in Pink Shimmer (CF) | GOSH Defining Brow Gel (CF) | Barry M Showgirl Extra Lengthening Black Mascara (CF) | Eylure No10 Dark Brown Eye Pencil

🙂 I would highly recommend those two primers up top; used together they're even better. The Hydro Primer has a jelly consistency which feels weird to use at first but it soaks in really nice, and the other primer is more of your typical velvety creamy texture (with bonus tea-tree). I put the jelly one on first then the Pro-Base and let them both soak in for 3-4 mins.

🙌 I use a crap ton of concealer - I'm not a fan of foundation so I tend to just use concealer on the areas I need it most. The Seventeen Stay Time concealer is my all-time fave, I only ever use the Collection one on hard-to-cover spots and the MAC one when I'm having a naff skin day (it's the most foundation-y concealer out of the three). The MAC concealer looks way darker in the picture above but trust me it's a very pale shade (because I am the whitest of white).

😚 When the base is done, I brush some KIKO powder over my T-zone - you can use this powder as a foundation too but I never do. I should probably try it out one day, though. I then use probably the best blush I've bought in years by Natural Collection. The shade Peach Melba is stunning, I cannot put into words how gorgeous and highly pigmented this blush is. It's so cheap too. You only need the tiniest bit on your brush to cover both cheeks. I then dust some highlighter onto my cheekbones and nose. Not too much, I'm not crazy in love with highlighter but I do appreciate it on dull skin days.

👀 I then work on my brows with the Eylure pencil - I like my brows to be slightly darker than my hair colour, so instead of opting for the blonde pencil I go for dark brown. My hair is naturally dirty blonde so I feel dark brown matches better than blonde. Next I run over my brows with a clear brow gel from GOSH so they stay tamed all day. I finish off with mascara - this Barry M purchase is fairly new and despite it's meh reviews online, I love it. It's very subtle which is what I wanted. It doesn't give you thick, dramatic dark lashes but instead gives them a healthy coating of black and makes them look fluttery and natural.

👄 If I'm going all out, I'll add some lippy too. My faves at the moment are Tanya Burr Lipstick in Pink Cocoa (CF), and Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Rum Raisin.

🛍 My favourite place to pick up make-up is definitely Superdrug - their rewards scheme is the best out there, so if you're not already consider getting a Health & Beautycard. P.S. Superdrug's own skincare ranges are all cruelty free.

Hope you like that little tour around my make-up bag. I might do a skincare version of this post very soon.
